Annual Awards Night
Zach Harvat Receives Mount Michael
Benedictine Award
Every
year an evening is set aside to honor the Knights
academic and artistic accomplishments over the past
year. This year there was much to celebrate.
In
Math and Science there were many awards including
last falls Class B Math Championship at UNL, This
spring many individuals received awards at the Creighton
Physics and Chemistry field days including a 2nd
place trophy in physics.
Most
recently at the Wayne State Math competition Joe
Stellato came in 5th in algebra while fellow freshmen
Michael Collins and George townsend came in 1st and
2nd respectively. Gun Hwan Kim came in 4th in Algebra
2 while in Pre-Calculus Baek Ho Jang and Sang Won
Bang came in 1st and 4th.
Besides
these awards Mount Michael students had many outstanding
accomplishments in the arts. Many students received
superior rankings at the district music contest and
last fall several were selected for Honor Bands & Choruses
and as well as All-State.
This
past year Mount Michael started up a speech team
which garnered numerous novice awards and Alex Lim
was highly ranked at the state competition
The
language students cleaned up on the National Language
Exams as usual.
The
Journalism team has provided yet another state championship
banner for the Palace.
Individuals
receiving special recognition at this ceremony included
Jay NeSmith with the "Key Staffer" award
as the outstanding journalism student. The Hugh O'Brien
Youth Leadership Award went to Alex Engelkamp. The
Omaha Exchange Club outstanding sophomore of the
year went to Bryce Howe.
The
Knights also have two National Merit Award winners
including Luke Weitkemper with his perfect 36 on
the ACT.
Mount
Michael's drafting students also received an award
at the S.A.M.E. competition
The
highlight of the night was the announcement of Zach
Harvat receiving the Mount Michael Award.
