State Cross Country Champs—Again!
Michaeleen November 1968 p.3
The Knights of Elkhorn St. John triumphed once more, as they continue to reign as State Cross Country Champions of Class C schools. Not only are they state champs, they have retained the championship in the annual Adelhem Hess Invitational meet held here at the seminary. This year eleven schools participated with a total of 66 runners. Al Liekhus won the event followed by Dick Kaup and Dave Hahn not far behind.
The team then traveled to Schulyer, Nebraska for the District meet on October 19th. Al Liekhus did not fair as well here since he was suffering from a leg injury, he managed to come in 15th, still enough for St. John to take second place, thus qualifying for the State meet which was to be held in Lincoln the following week.
No excuse was necessary when it came time for State as Dick Kaup led the St. John Harriers, easily taking third, Dave Hahn followed in 6th place, and Al Liekhus finished 8th. Charles Tramp was the team’s fourth man, placing 30th in the run. The fact that the team could fight back and win State after losing District is quite a tribute to the men on the team, the school and especially to the coach –Jim Kane
