Trailing 3-1 in the top of the final inning the Knights scored three runs to take the lead.   With 1 out and 2 runners on base, Jacob Kubasik singles on a hard ground ball allowing Drew Thorton and Patrick Collins to score tying the game at 3 apiece. After picking up their second out the Knights took the lead on a Waverly error when Sam Eberle hit a hard grounder to the shortshop. Jack Gottschalk, a substitue runner for Kubasik, scored to make the score 4-3 in the Mount’s favor.  The Vikings got the 3rd out against the next batter.

Now at the plate, Waverly batters were to face Patrick Collins, a Creighton University recruit. This was Collins first trip to the mound since the middle of last summer’s American Legion baseball season.  Nursing an injury this spring Collins has seen limited playing time.  The last few weeks he has been slowly working back into the lineup with fielding and batting appearances.  The final half inning had plenty of drama with 1 out and the tying run on 3rd base. For the second out, Mount Michael’s 3rd baseman, Jacob Kubasik fielded a bunt, for an out while holding runner’s at 1st and 3rd.  The final out was a fielder’s choice to shortstop Drew Thornton.

The Knights will taken on the Waverly Vikings in a rematch at 10:00 AM Saturday at Werner Park
