Spring Sports Promise Exciting Seasons

The spring sports season is right around the corner, and the four teams’ expectations are high. After stellar finishes last year, they all look to improve and build on that success.
Baseball finished 13-11, but fell short with a loss in the district championship. This year, the baseball team has high hopes to win districts and secure a ticket to state.
“We have a heavy group of seniors who have worked hard all offseason,” second baseman Max Vossen ‘22 said. “We do not want to settle for second place this year in districts.”
The trap shooting team made state and finished 23 out of 164 teams last year.
“Over the offseason, we have all put in a lot of time and work and are really hoping to get better and place higher this year,” Tucker Cudmore ‘22 said.
The soccer team finished third last year at state following a 1-0 loss against Lexington High School. The loss was very hard for them to digest, especially given that they had many opportunities to win the game or at least force an overtime period.
Mike Kult ‘22 has high goals for the team this season and believes that they have a good shot at qualifying for state again. He said that with the right mix of senior leadership and skills, the “sky’s the limit” for this year’s team.
“Because [the] last season I got to play for Mount Michael soccer was my freshman year, my main goal personally is to be as much of an impact on the team as I can be and to be a leader to the underclassmen so they can succeed themselves,” Kult said. “My goal for the team this season is to make state again. It’s going to be hard, but I think we can do it if we play well as a team.”
The track and field team had several members qualify for state last year. Mark Schroll ‘22, a four year varsity runner, and the 4×800 meter relay team qualified for the state meet.
Grant Foster ‘22 has been on the track team since his sophomore year and has yet to qualify for state. This year, due to the senior-heavy presence, he believes that this season will be one to remember.
“As a team, I think our goal should be to reach our full potential. We have a lot of talent on the team this year, and we can’t let it go to waste,” Foster said. “In my opinion, the team exceeded expectations last year, particularly in our running events. However, I think there’s tons of room for improvement in the field events, so I’m excited to see everyone compete this year.”
The final spring sport is golf. Golf finished as state champions last year, led by then-senior Luke Gutcheski ‘21 and are in prime position to make another run this year.
“We have a good group of guys with experience from last year,” senior Landon Fogle ‘22 said. “I feel very confident that we can win again, especially with Luke’s little brother, Trevor.”
This spring sports season has the potential to be a successful one, and we could see all four of the teams qualify for the state tournament.
