Mount Michael Coaches

Kent Christenson – Golf

Coach Christenson has been Head Golf Coach since 2008. He has been associated with Mount Michael for over twenty years. He has two sons who are Mount Michael graduates.

He is retired and volunteers at Mount Michael as a College Mentor. He has over 50 years of golf experience.
In recent years his teams accomplishments have included the following:
2018 River City Conference Champions
2018 District Golf Champions
Four consecutive years State Tournament Qualifier
2018 – 5th Place
2017 – 5th Place
2016 – State Runner-up

John Gathje – Cross Country, Track & Field

Coaching background: I coached cross country and track & field two years at Saint John ‘s Preparatory School in Collegeville, Minnesota, and one season as an assistant cross country coach at Holy Angels High School in Bloomington, Minnesota. I have been coaching at Mount Michael since 1991.

Coach Gathje attended  high school at Lourdes High School in Rochester, Minnesota (1981); college at Saint John’s University in Minnesota (1985); and graduate School at Wayne State College (M.S. 2009)
Coach Gathje teaches all Freshmen English classes and non-AP English seniors.

Kevin Gray – Soccer

Coach Grey has been coaching soccer since 2002 and has been at Mount Michael since 2007.He has coached all levels at The Mount from freshman to head varsity. He holds a USSF National D license,United Soccer Coaches National Youth Licence, and a GK level 1 and 2 license. He is married with three children. Tom Swanson – Baseball

Coach Swanson is a 2001 graduate of Mount Michael where he was a part of the American Legion baseball team for 5 years. While attending college at UNO, he was an assistant coach in the baseball program for three years before coaching one year at Omaha Benson, and eight years as the head coach of the Alliance, NE baseball program. Coach Swanson returned to Mount Michael in 2015 and has taught World History and European History while working as an assistant coach with the cross country and baseball teams.

Chase Petersen – Tennis

Coach Petersen played varsity for four years in high school and went on to play a year at Northwest Missouri University and later become the team captain at The University of Nebraska Omaha.

He has coached for 8 years and was the assistant at Skutt Catholic where his mother is head tennis coach.  Together they coached 4 girls team state champions and two runner ups. They also coached three boys team state runner ups. Coach Petersen has coached at Mount Michael since 2014 and has coached two state champion teams.

Derrik Spooner – Basketball

Coach Spooner has been the Head Basketball Coach at MM since the 2015-2016 season. He currently works at Mount Michael as the schools Activity Director. Coach previously worked in Millard Public Schools and Holy Cross Catholic School as a PE teacher. Coach Spooner graduated from Millard North High School in 2007. He then went on to attend Hastings College and play basketball and got a degree in Physical Education. Coach Spooner recently finished his masters degree in Curriculum and Instruction from Peru State. Coach also helps coordinate the Jr. Knights basketball program. Bob Sullivan – Wrestling

Coach Sullivan came to Mount Michael in 2011 as the PE/Health teacher. He became the head wrestling coach in 2016. Prior to coming to Mount Michael, Bob taught PE/health and was assistant wresting coach in Pierre, SD. He received his Masters degree from the University of South Dakota in 2007. Greg Wunderlich – Football

Coach Wunderlich is entering his 2nd season as the Head Football Coach at Mount Michael. Coach previously coached two season of Freshman basketball at Mount Michael before coaching football. Coach is a graduate of Naperville North High School in Naperville, IL and continued his football career at UNO. Coach graduated from UNO with a B.S. in Physical Education K-12. He and his wife Brittany are both teachers in Millard Public Schools and have been married since 2016. Coach is excited about the progress of the program and eager to continue the positive direction.
